Textile Art: A Multicultural Tapestry
We are excited to partner with a local artist, Mary Beth Magyar, who will be leading a tapestry project during the event! This project is based on the idea proposed by the late UC Berkeley Ethnic Studies Professor Ronald Takaki. He believed that the US is more like a tapestry and less like a melting pot. A melting pot assumes all cultures and beliefs melt together and become indiscernible from one another whereas the tapestry idea shows the inspiration of different cultures’ impressions and histories choices with color and textures of materials. This tapestry is a physical manifestation of that idea. She will be putting together the tapestry with donated fabrics at Walk Around the World, along with attendees help!
If you would like to donate fabric, please drop it off at the front desk of IMAA. Examples of fabric to donate include:
- A piece of fabric or lace from clothing
- T-shirt or other articles of clothing
- Scrap piece of fabric
- Yarn or wool
- Shoelaces
- Rope
- Cording
- Canvas
- Tablecloth
- Drapery
- Anything that can be cut, knotted and woven into place
- Buttons or other small items that can be woven in with the textiles
The materials will become a piece of art and will not be returned. Share something that has some significance to you in some way whether it be the color, texture, or the history of it.
This activity is made possible through a grant from the southeastern Minnesota Arts Council in Cooperation with a private foundation.
